Alvin Hayes, Jr. Biography
Award-winning musician Alvin Hayes Jr from Long Beach in California has loved music his whole life and started formal training age 9. His mother was his inspiration to get started and Alvin notes the saxophone as his calling, which he started learning age 10. Through private lessons, Hayes became a talented musician in the saxophone and many other members of the woodwind family including the flute and clarinet. It was during high school which Alvin found opportunities to pursue his music career and it was here he played in the County of Los Angeles Battle of the Bands in the Hollywood Bowl. He has surrounded himself with and played with many notable people including Henry Mancini, Patrice Rushen, Gerald Albright and the late Jeff Porcaro. After high school Hayes went to University of Michigan to study engineering, and here he played in many big and small bands. It was here he continued to associate himself with incredible talented musicians such as Cannonball Adderely, Junior Cook, Bennie Maupin and Buddy Collette. After graduation Alvin Hayes Jr went back to California where he studied at the Dick Grove Music Workshop and played with the former jazz great, Johnny ‘Hammond’ Smith.
Alvin took a break from recording in 1996, while teaching Mathematics. Shockingly for Alvin, on September 23, 1997 Hayes was returning home from church and suffered from a sudden stroke! The right side of his body was paralyzed and he thought his music career was over. Luckily, and through the work of doctors and therapists Alvin recovered and is now back to playing, better and stronger than ever.
